In 1939 when this movie was released, it faced stiff competition at the Academy Awards from ‘Gone with the Wind’ and ‘The Wizard of Oz.’ Nominated for an Academy Award in 1939, it didn’t net. But those who appreciate this film will always possess that is should have. By 1939, the Fleischer Studios had been crafting the finest animation around — they actually produced the first plump length enthralling movie (though Disney gets the credit) . This is the very best that the Fleischer Studios ever produced. Its characters are every bit as rich and deep as the very best Disney, Bluth or Spielberg-Katzenberg efforts. (Anyone who hears the classic line: “There’s a giant on the beach!” — will never forget it!) For years, I have wanted to earn my hands on this and remaster this movie digitally. (I do effects and compositing for a living.) It’s fantastic to eye that someone who loves this movie has given it the care and respect it deserves. Max Fleischer was a sheer genius, whose work includes the fresh Betty Boop, Popeye, the racy Superman — and his gain contributions to film include techniques of effects production that are mild archaic today. He was a master of his craft who, sadly, has itsy-bitsy recognition outside artists and animators. I have bought many copies of this over the years — usually in versions so poorly recorded and transfered that they are pitiful indicators of the Fleischer talent — and yet, everyone I’ve given it to, loves the movie. My personal gratitude to Winfield Hoskins, Seymour Kneitel and Thomas Reich for your tender care in restoring such a extraordinary movie. Thank you. It is truly long overdue and it is a case of giving honor to whom honor is due. This belongs proper alongside the best Disney, tucked suitable on the shelf alongside Bluth’s best — and when the young and the young at heart ask “What is this? ” — play it. My stout daugther plays it regularly and never tires of it and always quites “There’s a giant on the beach” — and she laughs. This movie is simply pure magic — breathtaking! Many of you will explore it and will suddenly remember seeing this long ago and your eyes will light up, unprejudiced as many who I have bought it for, have said to me: “I saw this years ago and have never known what it was. I care for this!” And they always smile. And I always rob more copies. The soul of a legal artist lives in this movie. And this is the best edition of it that you will score. Win it…

First let me say that I am not a mammoth fan of Winstar products, but they have done the restoration job on this title that they promised. The 60th Anniversary Edition image is so piquant and pure that I got rid of my Republic Laserdisc that came from their studio masters. As typical with Winstar, they created a unusual stereo soundtrack, but THEY HAVE INCLUDED THE Novel MONO TRACK! I would suggest selecting the novel mono track, their stereo track is distracting.

Israel’s entry in the Oscar hurry gives a recent definition of the genre of documentary film. Folman’s coast of introspection begins with his lack of memory and it seems that all he and his fellow soldiers have left is their dreams. One of the old-fashioned soldiers believes that the dream he has of the vicious dogs is subconscious punishment for his killing dogs on the mission. The film follows a stream of personal anecdotes and because considerable of these stories are dreams, Folman chose to deliver them through animation with the exception of the final scene and this is the scene that gives justification for the film. Therefore the film has a feeling that is both evocative and down-to-earth. We observe war as reprehensible and monstrous and as the stuff that nightmares are made of. It is not about who won the war, who was good or who made mistakes. It is about how we, as people, react to war and how it affects people who are alive to in it.

Primarily “Bashir” is about the trauma of conflict, memory and its repression but it is also about the specifics of Israel’s role in the Lebanon war and about war in general as it is experienced by fighting men. It revels truth by taking the viewer assist in time through the memories of people who witnessed it. It devastates as it reconstructs how and why innocent civilians were massacred because those with the power to halt what was going on did nothing. And the ultimate winner is often the ultimate head-scratcher: faced this year with two sure-fire classics - this film and the equally excellent French offering The Class (Entre les murs) [Theatrical Release] - the committee chose instead the little-known (and almost completely unseen) Japanese nominee Departures [Theatrical Release]. With all due respect to those filmmakers, you could hear the sense of bewilderment in the hall as the dazed winners (I suspect even they were dumbfounded) made their procedure to the stage. I’m definite that bewilderment was mixed with murmurs from an audience of insiders - something along the lines of “amazing, they’ve blown it again.”

A shame because this film is among the best you’ll ever view - it’s writer/director Ari Folman’s attempts to deal with his repressed memories of his role in the Sabra and Shatila camp massacres during the 1982 Lebanon War. Folman’s innovative spend of animation allows him to re-stage the memories of his fellow soldiers. At the film’s slay, Folman’s role (or at least his proximity to the events) is revealed and animation segues into real-life footage of what transpired in the camps.

The Golden Globe committee - with a far more firmer engage on accepted sense than the Academy - handed ‘Waltz’ its award for the best foreign language film of 2008.

Ansen’s article from last year reveals the Academy’s “attempt to reform a misbegotten system,” and concludes that “Impress Johnson, chairman of the committee, has vowed further reforms. History suggests it’s going to be an uphill battle.”

Yes, it’s all 21 movies with 21 bonus discs. All that’s phenomenal. But the packaging is dreadful. That heavenly box in the portray? It’s the flimsiest fold-and-assemble cardboard out there. Inside, the movies are not presented in chronological order. Instead it’s vol. 1-4 of the Ultimate Edition, stuck in this flimsy box. They’re all thin-line cases with the liner notes stacked to the side in the box. You can’t set aside them in the individual cases with their respective movies. Obvious, you could seize 20 blank cases, but then it wouldn’t fit in the box they gave you. Now all that’s for the first twenty. Then stuck on the slay, is the normal 2-DVD package of Casino Royale. It’s added on like an after-thought.
